Risen from the depths of Norway`s deepest fjord...
Do you know the blissful feeling when small things that you love, but that have little or nothing in common with each other, come together? You should really cherish those moments! My favorite kind of horror movies are creature features with giant animals, especially sea creatures. I love the Scandinavian nature, and preferably the Norwegian Fjords. I love black metal, and the rather unknown - but great - band Vreid worked on the soundtrack. The fact that these three things come together in one movie made `Kraken` a must-see for me. Moreover, but this is very personal, I love my family and exceptionally they all came along when `Kraken` premiered at the Brussels` International Fantastic Film Festival.

All that joy, and yet I only gave a 6/10 rating? Well, that`s simply because `Kraken` is not a great movie. It was great fun to wacht, but I can`t pretend it`s the best movie of its type since the original `Jaws`. At a fish farm in a remote village near Norway`s deepest fjord, risky experiments are carried out with sonar systems and underwater sound waves. The experiments are supposed to improve the quality of the salmon, but they are causing massive fish deaths and the vibrations have apparently also awakened a gigantic monster from the depths. Director Pål Øie follows the traditional `nature goes bonkers` pattern: some tourists disappear, rebellious environmentalists spread incriminating material via social media, a marine biologist - who happens to be from the village - is sent in, and the mystery continues to expand until suddenly gigantic tentacles emerge from the water.

The first half is too slow and patiently takes its time to show all the predictable/derivative situations as if they are featuring here for the first time in film history. We have the reunion with the childhood sweetheart, an extra dangerous demonstration of the sonars for the Japanese investors, the old fisherman telling the legend of the monster in the fjord, etc. Etc. The second half contains enough action and tension, but the horror and bloodshed on display remains limited. You can perfectly predict who survives and who doesn`t, and we don`t get to see much more than tentacles (with large suction cups) and a monstrous eye. And yet, if you`re in the mood for a traditional `giant animal` horror movie, `Kraken` is worth it!

So basically, Kraken is what happens when you mix a science project, a fjord, and a giant sea monster that clearly woke up on the wrong side of the ocean. The visuals are actually really cool-like Norway is showing off the whole time-but the story is a bit `hmm... okay I guess?`

The characters try their best, but honestly the Kraken is the main character here. Every time it shows up, the movie gets way better. When it`s gone, you kind of just wait for it to come back.

Takeaway: Don`t mess with nature... especially if it`s a giant tentacle monster. Also, sometimes the monster has more personality than the humans.

No oscar nominee, but its not supposed to be
I went into this movie thinking that it would be mindless monster slop, and it was. And it was fun!

There were many plot holes and unfinished threads throughout the movie, but I mean, hello! The movie is about a giant Kraken hiding in a Norwegian fjord. My expectations were not very high, and that prompted me to become pleasantly surprised by the whole movie experience. It was funny, it was gory, and things just happened, because why not?

The acting and dialogie was rough, the effects sometimes were kind of meh, but it was a good time nonetheless! As long as you don`t think too hard about it, this movie is perfect to watch with friends.

Blurred backgrounds - The Movie
I really wanted to like this movie. I love monstermovies and especially those involving huge sea creatures. However, the actors, especially the main lead, were flat and boring. The script is riddled with crimes against physics, logic and common sense. The special effects are dubius and mostly hidden in blurred backgrounds - and OH MY GOD - the blurred backgrounds! Did you want to have a look at the fjord or the Kraken? Good luck, they will mostly be out of focus in the background. The sad face of an actor was often the only thing to look at, because everything else was blurred.

I live in Oslo and cheered when I saw the blurred outline of our Opera House, just to realise that the blurred outline was the only thing I was allowed to see from my home city. All the effects seemed fake, there was no proper interaction between the effects and the actors - so the vast majority felt like CGI inserts. Look at a movie like Jurassic Park and the scene where the T-Rex blows Grant`s hat off, to see how CGI and practical effects must co-exist in order to build an illusion.

There was several deaths and other newsworthy stuff going on for quite some time wihtout any media attention and no other police presence than a single woman. How? Where are the journalists, the extra police, the crime scene investigators?

This was disappointing
Shot near where I live in Norway, I really wanted this movie to be great. It wasn`t. I`m not a big fan of monster movies, mostly because I get spooked pretty easily. I didn`t get spooked once. The sea creatures wasn`t particularly scary or real. This movie had some great potential if done right. Like, give Ridley Scott a proper budget for a remake and we`re talking. A final note: The movie location is set in a small town where they speak this very distinct porridge dialect, yet very few of the cast members speak that dialect. And those who do, do it rather poorly (e.g. The standup comedian from Stavanger playing Olav as an old man).
