The Man Who Dared 1946 Genres: Adventure, Crime, Drama Country: United States Director: John Sturges Duration: 66 Min Year: 1946 Actors: Leslie Brooks, George Macready, Forrest Tucker, Charles D. Brown, Warren Mills, Richard Hale, Charles Evans, Trevor Bardette, William Newell, Harry Anderson, Jessie Arnold, Phil Arnold, Brooks Benedict, Ralph Dunn, Art Gilmore, Doris Houck, Tom Kingston, George Lloyd Storyline: Trying to show that the death sentence should be outlawed when based solely on circumstantial evidence, a crusading reporter plans his own arrest and conviction for first-degree murder, but his plan goes awry. Release: Fritz Lang's "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" (1956) is probably the best version of this plot, but Sturges' was certainly not the first. The same story is told in Charles Lamont's "Circumstantial Evidence" (1935), where Chick Chandler played the crusading journalist who deliberately frames himself to make a judicial point. There are at least twenty other feature films called "Circumstantial Evidence", dating back to 1903 (!), and one of those may be the original source of the idea.
